DOLE 6 releases school kits to children at risk of Child Labor

In observance of the World Day Against Child Labor and as part of the 2017 Kalayaan Day Job and Business Fairs, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 6, in collaboration with Panay Service Exporters Association (PANSEA), released school kits to fifty school children from Barangay Isian, a depressed barangay in the Municipality of Tigbauan, Iloilo.

The children, ages 7-8 and in grades 2 and 3, all belonged to poor families.

According to Julius Ledesma, Sangguniang Bayan member of Tigbauan, Iloilo, the children’s parents are bamboo weavers whose livelihood is seasonal, and the children have the tendency to skip school to help them.

The kits consisting of a backpack, notebook (5pcs), pencil (2pcs.), pad paper (2reams), eraser (1pc), scissor (1pc), sharpener (1pc) and crayon 16’s (1 box) were turned over to the beneficiaries during the opening ceremonies of the Job and Business Fairs last June 12, 2017 at the Marymart Center, Iloilo City.

It was witnessed by the parents, teacher in-charge, and SB member Ledesma who accompanied them to the area.

Ledesma appreciated the project of the DOLE as it helped some families in their municipality, specifically those living below poverty level, answer the school needs of their children.

One of the parents, Cherry Taypohon, thanked the DOLE for the school kits. She said the provision of school supplies will help reduce their expenses.

As part of the 2017 Kalayaan Day Job and Business Fairs, DOLE 6, in partnership with Panay Service Exporters Association (PANSEA), distributed school kits to children at risk of child labor during the opening ceremonies of the Job and Business Fairs in Marymart, Iloilo City.

The pupil-beneficiaries, Sheila May Cabansagan and Joreen Muela, were also grateful for the educational supplies. They liked so much the backpacks.

“Thank you. We will always go to school,” they said in unison.

Danny Cadiao, the pupils’ teacher in-charge who also accompanied the children and their parents to the area, expressed his gratefulness to the DOLE for giving his pupils the opportunity to avail of the school supplies.

“These school kits will motivate and encourage them to study and give importance to their studies,” he said.

This is the third time that the DOLE, in close partnership with various stakeholders, has distributed school kits to children at risk of child labor. The first was in 2014 when 40 school children from Barangay Calajunan, Iloilo City were given school kits, and the second time was in 2015 when 235 child laborers and children at risk of child labor from the nine identified barangays in the Municipalities of Anilao, Banate, Barotac Viejo and Bingawan, Iloilo were provided the educational kits.

This undertaking is part of DOLE’s strong resolve to address child labor in the country, specifically in Region 6.
