DOLE 6 Participates in Task Force “Bulig Ilonggo” for OFWs

Iloilo City — The Department of Labor and Employment Region 6 actively participated in the creation and implementation of the Task Force "Bulig Ilonggo" for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families in war-crisis prone Middle East. This project was initiated by the Iloilo Provincial Government under the leadership of Gov. Arthur R. Defensor, Jr. as the province’s response to the crisis situation.

Relative to this, a 24/7 inter-agency Information and Assistance Desk was created to attend to queries and emergency needs of Ilonggo OFWs and their families in crisis-stricken countries in the Middle East. Family members of distressed OFWs in those areas may seek for immediate assistance from the Assistance Desk for the repatriation and determination of the whereabouts of their relatives.

Dir. Cyril L. Ticao, Regional Director of DOLE 6 and designated Co-Vice Chairperson of the Task Force Bulig Ilonggo for OFWs has committed and ensured the agency's active participation in the efforts to assist and repatriate the affected OFWs. Ticao immediately assigned DOLE personnel to man the Assistance Desk.

As to DOLE-specific assistance, Ticao said that Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, in a news release said that the labor department has set aside an initial P600 million for the immediate repatriation and assistance to distressed OFWs from the Middle East. Likewise, Bello stated that alternative overseas and local employment are being readied for affected workers.

“As of now, DOLE 6 focuses on promptly and effectively coordinating with the member agencies of the Task Force Bulig Ilonggo to ensure that appropriate emergency-responsive actions are implemented to help our distressed OFWs and their families,” Ticao said.

Ticao also stated that with the worsening security issues in the Middle East, DOLE 6 is ready to provide livelihood assistance to affected workers, once the directive is given.
